So difficult to choose but I really feel for Mrs Traynor in Me Before You. She’s so tense and fragile and vulnerable and her love for Will gives her immense strength even though it comes out all wrong and she gives totally the wrong impression. But underneath she is desperate to do whatever she can for her son. And who could argue with that?

Such an impossible question!! It’s hard for me to ever love a character more than Lou in Me Before You, After You, and Still Me! I love her amazing energy, the way she grows and changes, and her fearless love of life! 🥰 But Sam from Someone Else’s Shoes is up there for me too - love her character growth and her story!!

Having just read One plus One until 4.30am because I simply could not put it down, it has to be Jess (although Tanzie and Nicky are small wells of delight too). Jess's optimism and all round niceness brought me so much joy.

I came here to say the same! I love One Plus One and its tragicomic family (including farting dog).

Lou and Will in Me Before You. Still can't think about Will's final moments without welling up.

I love Louisa Clark from Me Before You. She was such a ray of sunshine, despite everyone’s best efforts to squash her. I’ve loved all of your books and can’t wait for your next!

This may seem like a strange choice, but my favourite character (so far!) is Nisha from Someone Else’s Shoes. That woman goes on a Journey with a capital J. I love her character arc, plus the karma that hit her ex was a thing of beauty.

I do love Margery in Given of stars! Though like others are saying it is difficult to choose one. Love her independence and strength.

It sounds like you handled an awful situation so well! You have written so many incredible characters, it’s hard to choose one. But it would have to be Margery for me. I love her independence paired with a strong love for those around her. A close second is Sophie. Such a beautiful character and story.

This might be controversial, but I really loved Nisha's development in "Someone Else's Shoes" because she is such a complicated character and really changed from egoistic rich person to a compassionate friend over the course of the story.

P.S. Very said I didn't know you were coming to Germany. I would have loved being part of the enthusiastic crowd!

I would have to go with Sam in Someone Else’s Shoes. That book really cheered me up during a tough time and was one of the last books my mum and I discussed together.

I walk past “Me Before You” on my bookshelf daily and get that good feeling inside. Can’t shake Lou and Will. (Appreciate the colorful covers that immediately catch my eye on my shelf🙂)

I've not yet read any of your books (that is a big YET!), but I absolutely adore your Substack. Your newsletters are my favorite things to discover in my inbox and I always finish them feeling better about the world, about writing, about being a reader, a person. Everything. So thank you from the bottom of my heart, truly. I can't wait to read We All Live Here!

The brilliant Margery from The Giver of Stars. Such strength and even in the final chapters, her falling apart being reunited with her baby... my gosh I shed tears for days! Hope the awful interview you had to endure fades from memory very soon and thank you for bringing us some lightness when we need it most x

Margery O'Hare, from The Giver of Stars, is my favourite (though it's not easy to choose one!) Margery endures the harshest of conditions to reach out to the mountain dwellers with her little library. She changes lives wherever she goes; she's tough, plain-speaking, and endlessly caring of the people she meets, especially the women. Brilliant character!

Too hard a question! But I’ll say Sam in Someone else’s shoes - her impossible juggling of all that life throws at her, while never losing her core wonderful self despite all the disasters (though you couldn’t tell her that and be believed)
